January 29 & 30:`Iolani Luahini Hula Festival

The 14th annual `Iolani Luahine Hula Festival will be held at the Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa at Keauhou Bay. The festival was established in 2003 with a vision to perpetuate the hula, and it also serves as a way to honor the memory of `Iolani Luahine and her contributions to the preservation of hula and Hawaiian culture. The two day event will again include hula workshops by renowned Hawaiian Kumu Hula, Ni`ihau shell jewelry-making workshops, and more. A prize will be offered to the Kumu Hula who best demonstrates `Iolani Luahine’s values of Hawaiian cultural education. Hula presentations will begin at 5pm on Friday and feature makuahine, makuakane and kupuna hula presentations. Saturday will begin at 1pm and will feature the keiki, wahine and kane presentations. The hula presentations on both days are a free community event and everyone is invited to attend! Donations will be gratefully accepted to support the festival. Evening musical entertainment on Saturday will begin at 7pm. Tickets will be available online and at the door. General admission $10; Reserved seating is $15. On Saturday, the festival will offer quality Hawaiian arts and crafts by local artisans beginning at 11:30 am.
